I Really Want To Stay At Your House

Cyberpunk Edgerunners

A Classic Dystopia

In the dystopian genre, we all love a tech-packed anime or live-action series. But the most captivating thing about dystopias is how they envision the collapse of humanity in a world overflowing with technology—where people turn themselves into machines. And spoiler alert: as much as we love stories with happy endings that leave us whole, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is not one of them.

A Twist to a Never-Ending Story

We’re drawn to dystopian tales with high-quality animation and futuristic worlds where everything seems possible. Cyberpunk sells us that dream—only to pull back the curtain and reveal the brutal truth: what it’s really like to be a regular person in a high-tech age. What it’s like to have no ambition. To feel replaceable. To discover love—and to feel pain.

Edgerunners

This anime follows the story of a teenager whose mother worked her whole life to give him a better future. David has no real goals of his own, but he tries his best to live up to his mom’s dream: that he’d become something greater than she ever could. To do that, he attends a prestigious school full of rich kids who see him as an outsider. He’s bullied and looked down on constantly.

That cycle of suffering shatters when his mother dies in a tragic accident. The very company she dedicated her life to refuses to pay for her medical treatment, leaving her to die—and leaving David completely hopeless.

For days, he lives on autopilot—until he decides to take action. David installs a military-grade implant called the Sandevistan into his spine, giving him the power to slow down time. He uses this new ability to fight back against his bullies and drops out of school.

Then, one day, he meets a girl named Lucy—someone who changes his world forever. She gives him a reason to keep going. He falls in love, and for a moment, there’s hope. But this story doesn’t end with roses and wedding cakes. It ends with Lucy reaching her dream—and David never seeing the light of the moon again.

The Future of Humanity

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners might not have a happy ending, but it gives us a chilling warning wrapped in a story about love, sacrifice, and survival. David represents the average person who has no hope for the future—until someone comes along who changes everything. And he’s willing to go to any length to be with her, even if it costs him his life.

The elite in this dystopia represent a terrifying vision of a future ruled by oligarchs—where the wealthy exploit the poor as guinea pigs for their tech experiments, with zero concern for human life. So yes, this anime left a hole in my heart. It wasn’t the ending I wanted—but maybe that’s the point. Because in a world like this, things don’t work out the way you hope. Especially not in a dystopia ruled by selfish leaders with no regard for anyone but themselves.
